I'm very fortunate never to have had a very serious reaction to bee venom.  Especially at this time of the year, my reactions tend to be minor.  On occasion, the local area does swell up somewhat significantly for a couple of hours.  I believe this happens when a sting releases the venom directly into a blood vessel and the venom gets more widely distributed in the body.
