I find it surprising that it took us so long to realise the beneficial properties of thymol.

Birds will go to extraordinary efforts to pull off pieces of thyme from a living plant to incorporate into their nest, even when dead material of the same size is available to simply pick up.  Obviously they knew about it long before us.
