Bob,

Here in Maine we have Tony Jadczak who is in my opinion the best Bee
Inspector in the country and a national asset. He looks at the migratory
hives (a portion of the 70,000) and I have gone with him in his
inspections. He does go to most all of the local beekeeper's dead outs that
happen in the spring and the general problem is Varroa. He does look at
every one of the calls on pesticide kills and the results are as I noted
and "real world"- conventional pesticides but no neonics, even though
neoinics are all over Maine both in commercial grower's fields and
homeowner/gardeners.The commercial treated fields are often pollinated by
the migratory beekeepers with no ill effects.

We are seeing just what many on this list are reporting, that the neonics
do not seem to be the problem that is painted by the press or the doomsday
groups that want to ban them. There is a large gulf between the lab and the
field.

What we are seeing with the neonics is the same thing that every new
pesticide brings and that is a change for some uses and tweaking of label
instructions.(I personally am mostly concerned with drench applications.)

So, here in Maine, we are inspecting hives and are not seeing the issues
that you bring up. But then, you are not getting inspections but seem to be
operating on guesses as to what is actually going on-since there are no
inspections. Here in Maine we have conclusions based on evidence, which I
consider real world, as opposed to conjecture.

As far as commercial beekeepers knowing what is actually going on, I have
looked at many commercial operations and they are a mixed bag as far as
experience and quality of their hives.
