I echo Allen's words.  Due to nuc sales, I typically sell a third of my
brood combs every year, so I actually rotate out combs at a fairly rapid
rate (others can do the simple math).  But since I don't individually mark
combs, some remain in the operation for a number of years.  I don't notice
any problem with them, but I also do not use persistent miticides, nor are
my colonies exposed to a great amount of industrial pollutants nor
agricultural pesticides.

I suggest using good judgement, rather than fixed simple rules.
