I thought you meant that the default for any UN-fertilized egg is to become a drone. Rarely, they can be female. 

I would say since 99.9% of fertilized eggs are female, that should be considered the "default." Diploid drones being the rare exception. But I get it; that isn't what you meant. Default isn't a biological concept, in any case.

A living cell isn't a mechanism and mechanistic approaches to it lead to misunderstandings and ultimately, errors.
