Hi All,

I'm looking for an economical/DIY II setup, planning to start with
only a couple dozen inseminations my first year to see how it goes. I
have done some light queen rearing, so I . With that in mind, maybe
I'll ramp up in year 2 of II and get a nice setup, maybe not. Does
anybody have any getting started suggestions for books, videos,
training that is must-have or must-avoid? I saw that Sue Cobey has a
course, but I'm not sure I'm ready to go all in yet. (
http://entomology.ucdavis.edu/Courses/Bee_Classes/ Email for 2013
schedule) And Latshaw has a course:

I read that allegedly you can get started with a Harbo syringe and a
homemade Laidlaw-Goss device. That type of approach is what I'm
thinking of starting off with for the first year. I have CO2 tank and
regulator (but don't know what connection for dispensing I need),
microscope, can pick up pipettes, but need and don't have at least a
harbo syringe, a homemade device, and after that it's a blur right
now- I probably need some hooks/prods/sticks/holders/bee numbers...
So something with a materials list would be good to start with as
well- I ordered Sue Cobey's DVD to start with.

My first inclination is to start with her video (on dadant.com and on
amazon.com) and try to go from there.

As a second question, is there a company that has more of a one stop
shop, maybe sells II setups/supplies? (eg II device, semen collection,
storage, dilution, fancy pipette, etc). I saw Latshaw and Schley are
2 commercial sources (only? best? most common?).

These sites have a ton of papers, videos and more, but it's not clear
where to dive in first:
http://www.honeyrunapiaries.com/instrumental-insemination/articles/
(many links broken?)
http://www.besamungsgeraet.de/__en/the-insemination-process/
I have a copy of Page and Laidlaw- there's probably a section in
there, but is it best practice? Joe Latshaw recommended "Instrumental
Insemination of Honey Bee Queens" by Laidlaw, but it's out of print
and $130 used on amazon...

Also, I'm on digest mode, so I will probably get all responses at
midnight or so if you don't reply to me directly.

Thanks,
Blair
