I thought the most interesting thing in the excerpt I posted (Spivak, et al, 2010) was this:

> For sampling whole apiaries, beekeepers can repeat the process in each of n=8 colonies, regardless of apiary size. 

When I was a state inspector, we sampled 10. But the point is, increasing the sample size beyond this does not improve the accuracy. On the topic of accuracy and reliability, this is the real world folks. With varroa, there are really only three values that matter: none, some, too many.
