Bob,
i do appreciate your ability to communicate, and feel as if i have
benefitted from yours and several others comments. Thank you for passing
your article in front of the eyes of the 3 researchers noted in your
original post.

I do, at times,on BEE-L,feel like the man in the fairy tale i read to my
girls when they were little:
He had finally captured a Leprechaun, and everybody knows the rules are that
if you do that, the litte fellow has to show you where the gold is buried.
Well, the Leprechaun led him to a tree deep in the woods under which the
gold lay. The man tied a yellow scarf around the tree so that he could find
it after going to his house to retrieve his shovel. The man made the
Leprechaun promise not to remove the scarf, and since Leprechauns cannot
lie, the man released him and returned for his shovel. Coming back to the
woods, to his horror, he found all the trees had yellow scarves tied around
them!

That was free-now to my question.

Bobs comments:

> I point to the fact that bees feed sucrose have
> got greater longevity than bees feed HFCS.
> (Roy Barker 1974 Tucson Bee Lab & Pamela Gregory 2008 Weslaco Bee Lab )
>
> I might also point out to my friend Allen Dick that Dr. Gregory's tests
> were also done on outside flying bees ( 2006) to show the results were
> the
> same.( Back in 1974 many beekeepers debunked the Barker USDA-ARS research
> saying the results would be different if the bees had been flying)

My comments / question:

Bill Truesdale (I am 95% sure-pleaase comment if Im wrong Bill) noted that a
study was done across the water that concluded that the best winter feed is:
Sucrose Best
HFCS (at least some specs) 2ndBest
Honey 3rd Best

What kind of life span difference are we talking about here-days , weeks..?

I am feeding HFCS, so this is really more than academic for me. I have about
300 hives. I regularly heat it to over 100 deg F for brief periods. Doing
this for months, and thus far no noticeable effects.

Thanks much for any substantive comments

John Horton
