'I'm blown away by someone who can essentially take the content of
several academic papers and turn that into a page-turner of a book.
That's a rare skill!'

my comments...
I bought this book for my wife who studied behavior with one of the founders of 'ethology'. I think in her younger days she even visited the site where the bee dance stuff was developed. She taught the same line of thought and did research for 30 years at the local university. She loved the book and did not seem to complain much about the language. As to the language this is possible a good example where writing style is directed to the audience and where the audience is not academic. The point being that the general public does not have specific definition for all kinds of things so the language must be constructed so that the general public has a good idea of what you are trying to explain. Of course it should also be pointed out that much of the so called anthropomorphic language is about group behavior and not individual behavior... so the description is not attributing individual human characteristic to individual animals but a comparison of group interactions.
