This thread has strayed far from epigenetics!

I'm of similar opinion as Peter Borst on antibiotics.  I personally use them
sparingly.  However, there are plently of commercial beekeepers who have
used them prophylactically for years, and their bees thrive.  Indeed, may
thrive better in their specific cases than those colonies not treated.

Treating with antibiotics is not cheap, and large commercial beekeepers
don't tend to keep doing things that do not give a good return on
investment.

Let me be clear that I'm not supporting the frivolous use of antibiotics!
However, we should be careful about making theoretical assumptions as to the
degree of harm that they might have to a colony.
