We've been surprised again and again this season by the huge variation in
mite counts.  Little rhyme or reason that we can see.  Unless you're doing
dozens and dozens of alcohol washes, you wouldn't have any idea as to the
degree of variability from hive to hive in the same apiary (relatively
consistent for the same hive from sample to sample, so not a question on
methodology).
