>Right, Pete.  And I am questioning how "absconding" is differentiated from "my hive died".  Here in the Northeast, hives die when mites overwhelm them.  But hives do not ABSCOND as a consequence of too many mites, at least not in my experience.

Have to agree with Christina. I've never had a hive abscond but I've had several collapse in the fall before I learned about how bad mites can be. Keeping bees now is certainly different than in the '70's and I relied on VSH queens to much.
