There must be a good purpose for the three little eyes that are just light
onitoring organs.

My presumption has always been that they tell the bee, when in the great outdoors, which way is up.  This may be why they come a cropper when they fly out in snowy weather and the ground is much brighter than expected so they try to fly upside down.
