They do seem to use that factor to explain the early-season queen activity, but I did not see how they would explain the decrease in egg laying later in the season when the same gradients may well exist.

All in all an interesting set of data and observations, and an ambitious use of the technology of the time, but I have trouble sharing their conclusions such as they are.  

Just one more aspect of a gestalt, I think.
