Funny thing about this whole discussion is that no-one seems to care whether or not newspapers work. I'd like to know, if one combines at random 100 queen right hives with 100 queen free hives with newspaper between and another 2 sets without, what's your outcome? 
What with all the background variation, how many hives would be needed in a simple experiment such as this to detect a 10% difference if it existed?  
But then again, maybe that's not the question- maybe the question is whether or not smoke works just as well as newspaper.
