bees at night?

I got home after dark yesterday and (without smoke, gloves or veil) took
off the outer cover, removed a syrup feeder pail, and proceeded to reverse
the inner cover so the notched opening is facing up.  There were loads of
bees on the inner cover and on the top bars of frames underneath.  My
actions did not phase the bees at all! (temp was about 65 deg F) Is this
surprising or not? I'm not suggesting anyone move to night handling but I
was surprised that not one bee seemed phased by me popping off the inner
cover. What's the deal with bees at night?
