I'll call the term "local" to be an area of specific environment to include; seasonal length and extremes and perhaps even flora and fauna where those factors impacted the colony. Wild sources of nectar, predators or even intermediate hosts of disease.

It would not be measured by length and width, but could include non contiguous land.

IMO PLB nailed most of the debate in this thread with his last post.

Semantics might produce more heat than light.
