I've done it.  I had to kill bees in a hollow tree one time. I put some 
sulfur in a smoker and puffed it into the opening.  It worked, but I will 
never do it again!

The bees crawled around puking like with a pesticide kill. It was not an 
instantaneous death for them.  I felt really bad.

And it ruined the smoker. The sulfur smell was always in it when it was lit.
