I got another email today from another beekeeper who observed the same.
For unmanaged feral colonies in the age of varroa, such traits would not be
unexpected, as they are adaptive.

There is no reason to expect that without some selective breeding, that a
locally-adapted feral stock would be amenable to beekeeping.
