Could the black bee in the US of the 1800s be a different bee than the Amm found in the UK today?  According to the UK side, the Amm gathered more honey when compared to the Italians under less than ideal UK conditions.

Are there any Amm imports into the US today?  It would be nice to run the comparisons again in the US.  A lot has changed.  Back in the 1800s the Italians were reported docile.  Not the case today.
