As demonstrated here, it is quite possible to quote enough to catch the
sense of a post without getting carried away.   You do not have to quote
entire posts or even full paragraphs.   Usually a sentence, or even a
phrase will give the reader enough information to know to what you are
responding.  If replying to several posts, simply address your response
paragraph to a person or quoted phrase.  No misunderstanding need follow
this practice.
