There is a recent paper from the Moran Lab at Yale, "Establishment of 
characteristic gut bacteria during development of the honey bee worker".

I'm pretty critical of much of what I read...but this is very well done...and very, very, very well written.  IMHO, this is an example of how things ought to be done.
