Honestly, I never split hives for that specific reason. I split them to repopulate my boxes in spring. My experience, however, is that by midsummer all hives, whether packages, splits, swarms, you name it -- all of them have varroa over the threshold. 

all me a doubting Thomas, but short of preventing the colonies from ever building up, I don't believe any of these techniques will work in our area due to the influx of migrating mites. 

By the way, the best work I have seen indicates that you need strong colonies for winter survival, not hobbled ones.
