Guessing that VA means Virginia, my reply is great idea but wrong time of
year.  Your bees will long since have arranged their winter stores and brood
area to suit themselves in the hive as you had it.  You have now disrupted
their domestic economy and this may cause them some extra work at best, death
at worst.  A good time to transfer to open screened bottom boards is in the
spring as the swarming season approaches.
