My (totally unscientific) view is that small cell is as unnatural and
therefore unnecessarily stressful to the bees as large cell. Left to
themselves, bees build a range of sizes of cell in different parts of
the comb and in different parts of the hive, generally smaller towards
the centre and larger on the periphery. In my (limited ) experience,
bees seem to do better in hives with naturally drawn comb than with
standard cell sized foundation.
