I really put my foot into it, this time. We were all taught in grade school that the earth is not spherical! Turns out, it is. The radius deviates only 12.5 miles from north to the equator. 

If you had a ball 10 inches in diameter, this amount of deviation would be too small to measure with a carpenter's tape. To anybody holding it, it would most assuredly be a sphere, and would bounce perfectly well.
