Rip, I agree with you about Steve Taber--he was one of my formative heroes!
 And I also have often pondered why bees don't punch holes in the middle of
the combs for winter travel.  Some day I hope to study the movement of
marked bees in the winter cluster.

Re Lennard's observations, when looking for correlations in data, one must
keep an open mind as to all possibilities.  Many things co-vary--sometimes
leading to surprising correlations.  An example would be the correlation
between the sale of bikinis and death by drowning.  Bikinis don't CAUSE
drowning, but because they are sold at the time of year that people tend to
go swimming, their sales figures would correlate with the rate of drowning
incidents.
