It's a common rationalization. A fallacy. The colony in which one "invests"
the "emotional sunk costs" of time, attention, and suffering from stings is
the colony most likely to be rationalized as a "good investment" in terms of
an exaggerated perception of the honey yield, the amount of brood, or other
metric.

If metrics were recorded, rather than rationalized, the beekeeper would be
told by his 49-cent spiral-bound notebook that the colony was no more or
less productive than other colonies in the same yard, subjected to the same
weather.  The beekeeper would then requeen an overly-defensive hive much
more readily.

Regardless, I've said more than enough times: "Life Is Too Short To Work
Pissy Bees"
