Randy's suggestion from his article "Queens for Pennies" is still the best recommendation: 
"get the Carson Pro Series MagniVisor Deluxe Head-Worn LED Lighted Magnifier with 4 Different Lenses (1.5x, 2x, 2.5x, 3x) (CP-60)".  I've have 7 or 8 different magnification systems and this one seems to work best.  The moveable LED lights built in are great. Try the different magnifications to find the one right for your task.
