Speaking broadly about pain, suffering, and animal consciousness, I stumbled onto this somewhat bizarre footage where a mother camel refuses to feed its young due to "postpartum depression," but upon hearing a sad string music for a while, the mother camel shed silent (remorseful) tears literally and changes her mind to feed the young. Wow. Given the short calving season in Mongolia, the young has to fatten up ASAP to survive it harsh winter and razor sand blasts. Thus people must have learned this trick as part of their tradition.

Given the tiny size of honeybees, it indeed is difficult for us to assign such attributes, but as shown in the lecture I had posted in the beginning of this thread, there could be more than one way to achieve consciousness, ways in which we humans have not yet understood. For example, the lecturer talks about how a monkey (whose visual cortex has been removed for experiment) could see via "blind sight," an oxymoron that explains this bizarre phenomenon where the blind monkey can discern (see) obstacles and food not using the severed visual cortex.

We tend to measure other creatures using only the stick we are so familiar with. When and if we humans visit other planets in the future, we will not be able to recognize other life forms if they lack the DNA sequence as their building block because that is, we believe, the only way life forms and duplicates itself.
