I never agreed with the Let Alone or "Bond" (Live and let die) philosophy. That was just one stream that ran through the group. Many if not most of us felt that every 4-6 weeks was an appropriate inspection cycle so we can keep up with what's going on in the hive and take care of our bees in a timely manner.

Your question about honey production is well taken although many of my clients are keeping bees for reasons other than getting honey. My hives are in city and suburban environments and therefore kept on the small side: 5 mediums maximum.
I run all mediums. The bees are all from cutouts and swarms. The quality varies widely. Some hives are way more productive than others but on average from these hives I'm getting about 30-50lbs per hive per year.

I don't consider myself to be an "AHB" beekeeper. True AHB colonies are too hot to work and as I said, I do believe in bee husbandry. So I can't use that kind of hive. But unfortunately I can't answer your question: I know of no beekeepers who maintain AHB colonies who treat for varroa.
