"And some senior scientists now say the "disorder" does not exist as a
separate illness.

Fine with me if this stands BUT I would still like to know the answer to
the following:

What has caused the loss of so many colonies apparently occurring in a
relatively short time period?

Stop looking for a novel agent if the evidence points in that direction.
what or which "old", presumably previously recognised agent(s)
has/have removed honey bee populations?

New or old - We still have not got the answer to the cause of the losses.

Regards,

Peter
