One of my hives has a bottom board in this style.  It doesn't seem
to make any particular difference either to the bees, or to me when
I open up the hive.  I'd say that, at least in my climate, it isn't
worth worrying about.  Of course, I'm in far northern Michigan, and
the temperature rarely gets above 80F, so the bees don't really have
any cooling problems anyway.  If the wider entrance makes any difference
at all, it would probably be in hotter climates.
