Pete said>So I have reverted to the tried and true method of writing on top of the hives. I have been using a large magic marker of late, though I know that many professional beekeepers use lumber crayons.

This year I tried using "rainproof" wet erase markers the kind used outdoors for restaurant menu boards. If they worked they would have been exactly what I've been searching for - a way to edit and update notes on the top cover and also be able to wipe it clean. In a drier climate, they might have had a chance but they were not rainproof- what a surprise. The writing lasted a little longer if I wrote on the edge of the telescoping cover or just under the lip on the hive body. They did buy me some time to transfer the notes to a notebook and there's still some hope if I can work out a simple rain guard or write inside somewhere. The best way is to have an assistant but mine are all five years old.
