Are these solitary nesters? I have seen something similiar
in my front lawn (in a partially sandy area). Mine have been solitary
nesters, but a whole bunch of them in the immediate area.
 
They dig the hole like dogs throwing out the dirt. Upon completion,
they bring in some sort of live green soft bodied insect and drag it
down into the nest...presumably as food for the emerging larvae.
Kinda fun to watch them operate.
