Hmmm ....  well that is an interesting event but could it not have been attributable to some other cause?   What I was wondering is why would the presence of lemon grass oil in the syrup cause the bees to migrate.  

You describe adding a couple of drops to a gallon of syrup and that would sound to be entirely reasonable, especially after reading the comments in the other threads this month.  The bees however decided to go rather than simply leave the syrup.  It is a bit hard to understand though, especially without really knowing how much lemon grass oil was added (a drop is hmm .. a drop).  Perhaps it was just too much oil ......

Can citronella oil be used in the same way since it is the same plant family?
