As a theoretical question, if you were to use a Varrox brand oxalic
vaporizer how do you handle 3 or 4 deep boxes. Assume that you are in
central Virginia and run 3 deeps, with some hives having an insurance box of
honey on top for wintering.
If on Sept. 1st you treated 20 hives per recommendations from the
manufacturer, 2 grams for 2.5 minutes and got the expected mite fall (2 1/2
days later) in only 2 hives, you would suspect that it wasn't working
correctly. The entrance was blocked during treatment and for 10 minutes
after.
If 6 days later you treated with 3 grams for the 2 1/2 minutes and this time
got 5 hives with more than natural drop (2 1/2 days later) you might think
that the fumes were not getting up through all the boxes. All boxes are
deeps with 10 frames. No fumes came out the top but there were a little
fumes around the bottom board plastic insert.

Is there anyone with experience in treating tall hives this way? What are
your recommendations? I realize that doing a mite count with alcohol would
help give better data.
Thanks

Brian Gallagher
