I got over 160 pounds out of 2 backyard hives, with excluders.
 
For me, controlling where the brood goes is worth placing and replacing
them.  I'll continue to use them until somebody proves, with controlled
studies published in a journal, that the term "honey excluder" is justifed.
Until then, I'll call "honey excluder" a "superstition".
