need to change management techniques
after every devastating loss, and thus
maintained a kind of stability in learned
techniques.   

Wrong. For example, when varroa hit the US a lot of beekeepers went out of business. They were the ones who wouldn't or couldn't adjust their management techniques to the changed game. The only thing that is constant is change. Bring on the new year!
