A second data point is the Bill Hesbach article "Superorganism Resilience"
(ABJ June 2018), described as a "peer-reviewed article", although authored
by a beekeeper, not an academic.  

My daughter used to edit a peer reviewed medical magazine and described the peer review system as 'mutual back scratching.'
