Jim:
        A 50:50 paste of borax and icing sugar shoved into SMALL plastic straws
(so bees can't get at it but ants can - and leave a space at each end of
the straw) and placed over the hive on the inner cover is effective.  It
has the added satisfaction of the ants bringing the borax back to the
offending ant colony and 'dealing' with it rather than broadcasting poison
more generally.
