According to our scale hives, at mid-day in the middle of summer in Mt and in CA, you will have as much as 10-15 pounds of bees outside of the hive.  We always questioned the accuracy of frame counts to grade bees, if done mid-day, but even we were startled by the number of bees outside of a strong hive in the early afternoon.  FYI - that's 4500-5000 bees per pound. 


So yes, you miss fumigating a LOT of bees and any mites hitching a ride.
