Greg Hunt (Perdue, USA) has been selecting for this same exact trait, and
documents it well.

But despite the encouraging results, even these bees are not able to survive
over the medium or long term without beekeeper intervention of some sort
with the intent of addressing varroa.

 

But it must be great for morale!
