The way that I read about to requeen when you have laying workers is similar
to what you did.  Namely take the hive 100 yards away.  Make sure there are
no bees in any of the chambers or frames and take first the bottom board then
the remainder of the hive back to the original location.   The workers will
find it.  The laying workers won't.

You then can requeen.

You do have to get rid of the laying workers so they don't kill your new
queen.
