I converted all hives to permanent OMF and at the same time reduced
 entrances to 7mm (no need for verntilation - plenty via the floor)

 This has eliminated the need for mouse guards and I have not seen a shrew 
in
 a hive since either (not sure how small a slot a shrew can get through).

 Another benefit is that I never get drone comb built under the frames.
