Polyethylene is made from ethylene, a natural plant hormone, used in
ripening of fruit.



That's a bit misleading.  Commercially, ethylene is produced from petroleum.  Its made and used on a huge scale, millions of tons per year, globally.  

Polyethyene, in its many forms, is the world's most common plastic.
