Pete, I feel that you are still missing my drift.  I'm not talking about
studying isolated hives.  What I'm saying is that if one runs a field
trial, an adjustment for any measured effect of varroa resistance must be
allowed for, due to the drift of mites that will invariably move from the
control group to any mite-resistant test group.  For example, this problem
has bedeviled the comparative trials of Russian bees vs Italians.
