Hive with honey stores, but no bees, or if some workers present, deformed
wings evident.

Remainder of broodnest with scattered sealed brood, adult bees inside, some
dead in process of emerging, tongues out. If you remove, mites in cells,
unemerged adults generally with deformed wings.

Abundant white guanine deposits on cell "ceilings" in the broodnest--This is
the main sign.

Brood combs typically have a "tobacco-like" smell.

The suite of symptoms is all too familiar to those of us who have been
keeping bees since before varroa.
