Hard to know as the hives are usually buried under snow from as early
as Christmas through to late February early March

Might be interesting to place a thermometer sensor (from a weather station
maybe) in the middle of the brood area at the start of winter and see
whether brood rearing temperatures are maintained there throughout the winter or
not. If 'not' there might be an opportunity for 'soft' varroa control.
