I don't consider the base board is finished until it's married to its unique shim
This shim hangs on (flush) finishing nails on the side in the warm season
The holes in shim should be barely larger than finishing nail head
Its length is barely loose, thickness to leave 6.6-6.7 mm bee entrance (cut from 1" stock)
A 6.8-6.9mm wedge is required to keep it in place, a twig will do in pinch
The wedges do get lost
Mice seldom get past this, sometimes they go in flight hole
This has cut down the mouse gnawed comb to almost none
